Option Year

The agency's right to extend the contract another year without re-competing.

What it means

An option year is the government's right — not obligation — to extend a contract for another year without running a new competition. A "one base + four option" contract can run five years if all options are exercised.

Option years are why a modest base-year value can represent a much larger total opportunity.
